Submarine USS San Francisco

The USS San Francisco is the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the city in California, San Francisco. The submarine was launched in the year 1979; as it was replaced with modernized equipments its service period was extended to 2017.

On 8 January 2005, the submarine was travelling at a speed of 40mph before crashing head on to a sea mountain. The impact of the collision was so strong, that the entire front portion of the submarine was damaged. There were 127 members on board and the sub was 525 feet deep in the Pacific Ocean.

The submarine was led by Captain Mooney, who along with his crew members used the ballast tanks to pump air to reach the surface. The submarine had managed to survive the impact as it didn’t let the water to flood. With one dead and 23 members of the crew severely injured, this was one of the worst mishaps survived by the mariners.
