Crystal Crop Acquires Bayer's Herbicide Business
Agrochemical firm Crystal Crop Protection has acquired the herbicide active ingredient Ethoxysulfuron from Germany’s Bayer AG, marking its 13th strategic acquisition. The deal, announced, includes Bayer’s 'Sunrice' trademark and related mixture products, along with all necessary registrations, allowing sales in select Asian markets. The herbicide is widely used for controlling broad-leaved weeds and sedges in rice and cereal crops.
Crystal Crop Managing Director Ankur Aggarwal stated that the acquisition is expected to boost the company’s earnings by 20%, leveraging its strong distribution network and local manufacturing capabilities to deliver cost-effective solutions to farmers across India, South Asia, and South-East Asia. Target markets include India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Pakistan.
This marks Crystal’s second purchase from Bayer, following its 2021 acquisition of Bayer’s Indian seed portfolio for cotton, pearl millet, and mustard. Earlier in 2024, Crystal acquired I&B Seeds, further strengthening its presence in crop protection, seeds, and farm mechanization.
The company has previously acquired brands from major agricultural firms such as Syngenta, FMC, BASF, and Dow-Corteva, underscoring its aggressive growth strategy in the agricultural sector. With this acquisition, Crystal Crop aims to enhance its product offerings and support farmers with advanced, accessible solutions.
