Chennai Still India's Suicide Capital?
BANGALORE: Suicide is no more an unusual issue in India, as the country is witnessing one suicide in every fourth minute. It has indeed become an extreme social sickness in India. India’s major cities like Bangalore and Chennai recorded the increasing rate of suicide irrespective of the declining trend in many other parts of the country, as per the latest report by National Crime Records Bureau entitled “Accident Deaths and Suicides in India 2013.”
The report further revealed that overall suicide cases have been considerably fallen to 1,34,799 from 1,35,445 in 2012. As per the figures recorded in 53 mega cities in 2013, such incidents increased to 21,313 from 19,120. In 2013, these two cities have reported highest number of suicide cases where Chennai witnessed 2450 and Bangalore 2033 cases. In contrast, other cities like Mumbai and Delhi had recorded much lesser cases.
The NCRB report also stated, “It is observed that social and economic causes have led most of the males to commit suicides whereas emotional and personal causes have mainly driven females to end their lives. Family problems (24 percent) and illness (19.6 percent) have accounted for 43.6 percent of total suicides in the country during 2013,” reports Deccan Herald.
Overall, cities across the country accounted for 35.5 percent of the total suicides in India. Among states, Maharashtra with 16,622 suicides, witnessed the highest number in 2013, followed by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka with 16,601, 14,607, 13,055 and 11,266 respectively. As per the report, homemakers and farmers account for a higher number in the suicides across the country.
