"Breast cancer can also be termed a lifestyle disease," says Dr Jayanthi. "Late marriage, fewer children and declining trend of breastfeeding are some causative factors, and all these are related to urbanization. According to scientific studies, breastfeeding and pregnancy keep breast cancer at bay. Obesity, which is related to lifestyle, is another cause," added Dr Jayanthi Thumsi, senior consultant, breast oncosurgeon, BGS Global Hospital.
According to experts, most breast cancers don’t show signs like pain until the final stage, since 95 percent of the lumps in the breasts are painless. So, doctors advised on the importance of getting a breast cancer check-up done every year especially for women over the age of 30 and for those above the age of 45, mammogram test are required every year.
The PBCR reports which were compiled from 11 major cities across India, shows that the least number of breast cancer cases are recorded from Pune with 23.3 cases per lakh followed by Kollam with 25.8 cases. Thiruvananthapuram has the second highest incidence after Bangalore with 35.1 cases per lakh and Chennai follows with 32.6 cases.
