Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled its ambitious plan to invest a staggering 7.8 billion euros (equivalent to $8.4 billion) in its European Sovereign Cloud based in Germany, spanning until 2040. This strategic move underscores AWS's steadfast dedication to catering to Europe's burgeoning digital sovereignty demands.
The focal point of this initiative is the establishment of the inaugural AWS Region in Brandenburg, Germany, set to be operational by the culmination of 2025. Max Peterson, the Vice President of Sovereign Cloud at AWS, emphasized the company's unwavering commitment to furnishing clients with state-of-the-art sovereignty controls, privacy fortifications, and top-notch security features within the cloud infrastructure.
Peterson further elaborated on the significance of this substantial investment, accentuating the infusion of €17.2 billion (approximately $18.6 billion) into Germany's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2040. This financial injection is projected to catalyze the creation of an average of 2,800 full-time equivalent positions annually within various sectors, ranging from construction to engineering, fostering a robust local economy.
The decision to anchor the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Brandenburg garnered acclaim from Professor Jorg Steinbach, Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour, and Energy. Steinbach underscored the pivotal role of cutting-edge data centers in fortifying the bedrock of a thriving digital economy, expressing satisfaction that AWS has elected Brandenburg as the nucleus for its long-term investment in cloud computing infrastructure.
Moreover, AWS elucidated that the European Sovereign Cloud will furnish customers with the requisite capability to adhere to stringent operational autonomy and data residency stipulations within the European Union (EU). This delineates AWS's concerted effort to empower European businesses and organizations with the tools and infrastructure indispensable for navigating the evolving regulatory landscape while safeguarding data sovereignty.
