Audio Visual Aids Revolutionizing Agriculture In India

Today, Digital Green has a team of 77 workers who work across eight states of India to produce and show videos to farmers and thereby by enlighten them with better technologies of farming.
“I feel technology can provide some of the most advanced solutions in the simplest ways. And we are using technology to help the most important people of the community, who provide us food,” says Gandhi.
Till now around 500 videos has been produced. Prior to screening, workers from NGOs check the quality and accuracy of the information in the videos.  Other than farming techniques, subjects like health and livelihood practices are also contained the videos.
A team of around four to six members get together in the production of an eight to ten minute video. They complete the film in 3-4days and villagers watch it in communities every two weeks via battery-operated Pico Projectors.
Gandhi’s NGO, Digital Green gets financial support from donors, government agencies, and private foundations and has cost-sharing agreements with its partners.
“It is very important to keep the government involved. It somewhere facilitates the entire process and also enables us to use the existing resources in rural areas,” says Gandhi.
The videos not only encourage villagers to adopt better farming methods but also have made them develop personally over time. Gandhi says, “I have seen women who would be really shy in the first video in which they are featured and then speak confidently and loudly in the next video.”
These highly impactful videos are available in Digital Green’s website and its YouTube channel.
“I think that people should just go out in the field, immerse themselves in rural communities, identify real problems, and take a human-centric approach to designing solutions. Technology platforms can amplify the effectiveness of development across multiple sectors,” says Gandhi.
