ATOMEXPO: Advancing Environmental Tech for Carbon Neutrality
Experts from various countries including Russia, Brazil, India, China, Ethiopia, Belarus, and others convened at the ATOMEXPO 2024 to deliberate on the imperative development of environmental technologies. Hosted by Rosatom, a prominent Russian nuclear power corporation, the conference commenced on Monday with a focus on enhancing both human life quality and environmental conditions.
Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business of Rosatom, stressed the indispensability of innovative environmental technologies in achieving carbon neutrality. He underscored the significance of transitioning towards green energy sources such as nuclear power, alongside advancements in storage systems, solar geoengineering, green cities, quantum solutions, and digital environmental monitoring. Komarov highlighted Rosatom's successes in these domains, offering its scientific and technological expertise for collaborative ventures.
Emphasizing the need for an international research and development infrastructure, Komarov emphasized the apolitical nature of environmental discussions, advocating for a collective effort to safeguard the planet's future.
Svetlana Radionova, Head of Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, outlined Russia's commitment to fulfilling obligations under the Stockholm and Basel Conventions. She proposed harmonizing deadlines for decision-making on transboundary waste movement under the Basel Convention, emphasizing the importance of prior informed consent and timely responses to import requests to ensure environmental and economic efficacy.
Adalberto Maluf, Brazil's Vice Minister for Urban Environment and Environmental Quality, highlighted the crucial role of experience exchange in developing and implementing environmental technologies, especially in meeting international commitments. Maluf stressed the necessity of forging close partnerships to adapt foreign technologies to local contexts effectively.
Round table participants advocated for an international partnership dialogue to consolidate efforts between businesses and governments in deploying advanced environmental technologies, decarbonizing economies, and disseminating successful practices worldwide. The envisioned dialogue aims to establish a robust technology foundation by leveraging the best national environmental solutions and fostering collaborations, potentially leading to the establishment of an international scientific and production engineering center for environmental technologies.
