AIIMS Bhubaneswar Launches Robotic Knee Replacement Facility
Making history in a notable leap towards medicare innovation, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Robotic Knee Replacement centre, thereby becoming the first government hospital from Odisha and Eastern India to have this world-class surgical innovation. The development signals a revolutionary new era for orthopaedic care, particularly in the realm of public medicare.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar's Department of Orthopaedics performed its first robotic knee replacement surgery on a 66-year-old woman patient. The operation was performed with precision by employing advanced robotic technology, and the patient is stable now. AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas appreciated the team for this milestone achievement. "With the addition of robotic services, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has made Robo-assisted surgeries available to patients from all walks of life," he said.
Robotic knee replacement has numerous advantages over conventional techniques. Conventional surgeries, dependent on jigs and cutting blocks, are susceptible to human error, particularly in challenging situations. Robotic systems, however, offer real-time feedback to surgeons, which makes them more precise and in control. The robot can even execute certain steps independently with the help of artificial intelligence and navigation, enhancing the precision and consistency of surgery.
Orthopaedics Head of Department Dr. Bishnu Prasad Patro spoke of the revolution this technology has brought. "The robotic arm immensely improves the surgeon's skill to plan and execute every movement of the operation with utmost precision," he added. The outcome is improved alignment, quicker recovery, and enhanced long-term outcomes for patients.
Knee replacement, which is now called "the surgery of the century," has changed the face of treatment for those who suffer from extreme arthritis and long-standing knee pain. For patients in their 50s and 60s, such procedures allow them to move again and significantly enhance the quality of life. With the inclusion of robotic aid, the process is further optimized and made accessible.
This innovation is especially effective for patients who are covered under government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, which provides free knee replacement procedures to the deserving. By integrating such schemes with cutting-edge technology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar facilitates access to top-class healthcare on an equal basis.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by senior medical experts such as Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent; Dr. Sujit Tripathy; Dr. Gurudip Das; Dr. Meganath V Pawar; and other officials along with Executive Director Dr. Biswas and Dr. Patro.
With this initiative, AIIMS Bhubaneswar not only becomes a new benchmark for public sector healthcare but also opens doors for large-scale implementation of robotic surgeries in all government hospitals across India.
