- Project Utthan to cover 1.5 lakh students across 947 BMC schools from 2025–28, focusing on Grades 1 to 4.
- Aims to strengthen Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), aligned with NEP 2020 and NIPUN Bharat.
- Adani Foundation fully funds the initiative; BMC provides infrastructure, 316 trained 'Utthan Sahayaks' to support struggling students.
In a major leap towards strengthening early education, the Adani Foundation and Adani Electricity have signed a Letter of Agreement with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to scale up Project Utthan a flagship CSR initiative focused on enhancing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) skills across Mumbai’s public school system.
Initially launched in 2021 as a public-private partnership between BMC, Adani Foundation, and Adani Electricity, Project Utthan has already transformed learning environments in 83 municipal schools across areas like Malad, Dahisar, Borivali, Chembur, and Kurla. The initiative has directly benefitted over 25,000 students, showing measurable improvements in academic outcomes, classroom engagement, and inclusivity.
With the latest agreement, Project Utthan will now expand its reach to all 947 municipal schools across Mumbai, covering over 1.5 lakh students in Grades 1 to 4 during the academic years 2025–26 to 2027–28. This makes it one of India’s largest foundational learning interventions led by a corporate group.
The program is closely aligned with the Government of India’s NIPUN Bharat Mission and reflects the core principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It aims not only to enhance academic achievement but also to bring systemic reform by building strong foundational learning environments in Mumbai’s public schools.
To support the initiative, 316 trained female 'Utthan Sahayaks' will be deployed across schools. These Sahayaks will work in tandem with teachers to assist children who are irregular, disengaged, or struggling academically ensuring no child is left behind in acquiring essential literacy and numeracy skills.
The initiative also includes student-centered pedagogies and supplementary learning materials, including support for Grade 10 students to bolster their academic performance.
Adani Electricity and Adani Foundation will fully fund the program’s implementation, while BMC’s Education Department will facilitate necessary logistics and infrastructure.
Strategically, the initiative also aims to improve Mumbai’s performance in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2027-28, reinforcing its broader goal of transforming the public education system into a more inclusive, equitable, and effective model.
