AAP member Atishi becomes the new CM of Delhi after Kejriwal's resignation
Delhi’s Aam Admi Party Minister Atishi is set to become the Chief Minister following Arvind Kejriwal's resignation after his meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena this afternoon. The decision was made during an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators' meeting held today. At the meeting, party leader Dilip Pandey suggested that Mr. Kejriwal choose the new Chief Minister.
When Mr. Kejriwal proposed Atishi's name, all AAP MLAs supported it, and Atishi was elected as the leader of the legislature party.
Having earned a degree from Oxford University and being awarded the Rhodes scholarship, Ms Atishi now holds significant positions in the Delhi government including Education and Public Works Department. She has played an extensive role within AAP's leading initiative to reform education among schools in Delhi.
After Mr. Sisodia was arrested in connection with Delhi's abolished liquor policy, the 43-year-old MLA from Kalkaji became a minister. When both Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Sisodia were imprisoned due to corruption charges, Atishi represented the party at media exchanges and events while articulating its stance accordingly.
Ms Atishi was chosen by Mr Kejriwal on August 15 to hoist the tricolour at Delhi government's Independence Day event. Despite being thwarted by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, it was evident that Ms Atishi had garnered significant trust from the AAP leadership.
Followed by the resignation of former CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal and supreme court’s decision of granting bail to Kejriwal in a corruption case linked to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. It helped him to get release.
The national capital's Assembly elections are planned for February. However, Mr. Kejriwal has requested that they coincide with the Maharashtra election in November. The leader of AAP and his former Deputy Manish Sisodia have declared their intention to seek public approval instead of returning to their positions without a clear endorsement from voters.
