Pembillai Orumai

A group of striking women raised their voice against the low salaries and abysmal working condition that they were being offered in tea plantations of Munnar in Kerala in September. They called themselves Pembillai Orumai which simply means women’s unity. The protest had a total attendance of about six thousand and the male trade unionists who tried to join the protest were shackled away, such was their anger.

The young rapper from Chennai released a music video, ‘Kodaikanal Won’t’, which gathered the attraction of 8, 78,705 people. The video was based on the mercury poisoning caused by Hindustan Unilever’s thermometer factory in a hill station in Tamil Nadu. The viral nature of the video forced HUL to issue a statement promising action.
