With No Salary for Several Weeks, Karnataka Based Worker is Starving in Saudi Arabia

BENGALURU: Imtiyaz Sheikh Sardar, a driver who hails from Honnavar in the Uttara Kannada district is broke and starving in Saudi Arabia. He has been working in the country since 2014. For the past few months, his employer hasn't paid him a single penny; even making him starve for the past few days. Trapped in a tragic situation, Imtiyaz is also being denied from returning back home.

In an attempt to get immediate help from the Uttara Kannada district administration, Imtiyaz sends a WhatsApp message mentioning about his miserable situation and the employer’s refusal to listen to his grievances. However, when asked about location and other information, the driver only mentioned his passport number and refused to reveal his local address.

"We received the message yesterday (Saturday) and we've replied to him seeking information about his employer. We need details on his employer, his contract, among other things, to be able to initiate action. He is yet to write back to us," says S Nakul, Deputy Commissioner, Karwar.

Unable to feed himself as well as his family, Imtiyaz contacted the Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner's office. The Uttara Kannada officials are taking necessary steps to bring the driver and his family back to India. In the WhatsApp message, he mentioned that his family was also in trouble and thanked the officials for their sincere efforts.

Imtiyaz's case is the third among the past incidents where workers from Uttara Kannada faced the similar kind of treatment from their employers in Saudi Arabia.
