Will Trump Presidency Be a Blow to India?

BENGALURU: Few months back, before announcing United States’ 45th president, some of the Indian ambassadors thought Donald Trump would never win the party’s nomination, while speaking to senior US administration members or prominent intelligentsia. They soon realized that they were terribly wrong with their analysis.

Now that Trump is declared as president of US, it’s interesting to see how he carries the relationship between US-India. Below are the main policy areas that could be impacted during the Trump’s reign, according to News Dog. Indian officials should find a way out to deal with these challenges:

Previously, convergence of the ‘Act East’ policy and the ‘pivot to Asia’ had justified the strategic alliance between India and US. But now India is more concerned if Trump’s administration adopts a more transactional approach to international security in the Asia-Pacific region.

Another major trouble for India would be reforming of H1B system and holding the issuance ‘green cards’ that will keep Indian IT firms and their lobbyists work hard for next four years.

According to Trump’s blistering words at China, relations with them may deteriorate. He had asserted about reforming trade relations, designating China as a ‘currency manipulator‘ and cracking down on IPR theft.  An aggressive affiliation between the US and China might impact India, but it is not clear to what range it will affect the nation.

Trump had once stated that Climate Change was a Chinese conspiracy and assured to take back from the landmark Climate change agreement forged at Paris. On this account, India is uncertain about Trump’s administration giving special preference to renewable energy, which did not even get a mention in his Energy Plan issued in May this year.
