Top Five Countries with the Most Nobel Laureates in 21st Century

BENGALURU: Nobel Prize winners of 2016 across all the streams have recently been declared. Two trios of scientists won the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry. American artist, Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature. President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos won the Nobel Peace Prize, Yoshinori Ohsumi in Physiology or Medicine, and Bengt Holmstrom in Economic Sciences. But with that happening this year, it will be quite interesting for everyone to know the country with the most number of Nobel laureates. Times Higher Education compiled the list of countries with the most number of Nobel Prize winners from 2000 – 2016.

United States of America (USA)

The Unites States is leading the list with 72 Nobel Prize winners in the current century. There are nine universities in the USA on the Top 10 list of Universities with most Nobel Prize winners. This statistic shows how the USA dominates the list of most prize winners.

United Kingdom (UK)

The UK is in second place of the list, but way behind the USA. UK produced 16 Nobel Prize winners in the current century in comparison to 72 from the USA. Oliver Hart of UK is the new inclusion in the list for winning the Nobel Prize in the field of Economics.


Japan is not that far from the UK. Japan has bagged 15 Nobel Prize awards in the 21st century. Yoshinori Ohsumi is the most recent to be included in the list, after winning the Nobel Prize 2016 in Physiology or Medicine.


Germany is in fourth place in the list with a total number of seven Nobel Prize winners. Stefan Hell was the last German citizen who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on 2014.


Israel is fifth on the list with a total number of five Nobel Laureates. The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology is placed at 10th position in the top ten university list with most Nobel Prize winners and it is the only non-US university in the list. Arieh Warshel was the last from Israel who won Nobel Prize in Chemistry on 2013.
