These Are the 20 Cities Nominated For Smart Cities Mission


BENGALURU: India as a developing country is most prominently heading towards becoming a cluster of smart cities across the country. Giving a push to urbanization, the Union ministry for urban development will on Thursday announce the names of 20 cities to be selected in the first round of the Smart Cities Mission, according to livemint.com.

The 20 cities chosen for Smart City Mission are Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Dhavangiri, Indore, the New Delhi area, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal. These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply, sanitation, solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

Union Minister Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu has said that the present government is committed to ensure inclusive development under new initiatives like Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Smart City Mission, Swachh Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). He has also expressed concerns regarding the exploitation of urban spaces by the well-to-do sections of the society at the cost of the poor and the marginalized and stressed on including these issues while taking decisions related to urban governance.

In order to support development of smart cities, the Urban Development Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bloomberg Philanthropies, which will work as Knowledge Partner and support development and execution of a Cities Challenge under the Smart Cities Mission.
