'Rise Of NGOs', A Boon To Indian Society

As directed by Supreme Court, the CBI attained details from the states and UTs about how the NGOs are working and also the status of review of their funds. Unfortunately, major states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh failed to provide any data about the number of NGOs working within their zone.

According to the information attained through RTI queries by Asian Centre for Human Rights, between the years 2002-09,  the central and state governments funded 6,654 crore to various NGOs, with an average of around 950 crore per year.

Not just from the country, during the financial year 2010-11, record shows that around 22,000 NGOs received a total of over $2 billion from abroad, of which $650 million are from the U.S.
