Not Kolkata, Mumbai the Costliest City in India For Travelers

BANGALORE: With the world advancing towards globalization, a developing country like India too is moving at a very fast pace in terms of development and progress. In the name of development, many Indian cities are getting costlier year by year.

As per the latest survey entitled TripIndex conducted by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, Mumbai takes the top spot from Kolkata this year as the most expensive city with a total TripIndex cost of 10771.76. Jaipur emerges as the most budget-friendly city, with a total TripIndex cost of 7625.32. The index is carried out across 56 cities all over the world including 9 Indian cities. The index compares the cost of an evening out, taking into account typical costs for two people to enjoy a pre-meal cocktail, a meal out, taxis, and an overnight stay for two during the summer travel months of June to August.

When it comes to cost of Hotels, Mumbai has the highest average hotel room cost of 6734 whereas Jaipur are the cheapest to stay with an average hotel room cost of 3602.33. Mumbai retains the top spot this year as well for the most expensive ‘hotel room night’. However, the room rate has fallen from 7580 in 2013 to 6734 in 2014. Jaipur (new entrant) is the least expensive city this year (3602.33) vs Pune (5230) last year.

In the ‘dinner for two’ category, Chennai emerges the most expensive this year (3680.83) trumping New Delhi which took the top spot last year with 2767.

Comparing Indian cities fare with other international cities, London, the most expensive international city for a city break for Indians (31222.27), is almost thrice the cost of Mumbai, the most expensive city in India and four times the cost of Jaipur, the least expensive city in India.

At 2184.99, New York is the most expensive city in the world for Indians in the ‘hotel room rate’ category. It is over thrice the cost of Mumbai (6734), the most expensive city in India and 6 times the cost of Jaipur (3602.33), the least expensive city.
