Modi's 'Housing for All' Scheme to Have Cheap Power and Water

BENGALURU: To facilitate housing for all in rural India, the new initiative by Modi government is called ‘Housing for all’ that compiles cheap power, labour and water. It an ambitious program that aims to provide shelter to a major rural population in the next few years.

Under this new scheme of the Prime Minister, 30million houses will be newly constructed, each having a total area of 250square feet.

This new scheme by Modi includes the provisions of Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and it will push up the per-unit subsidy. According to IAY, the present cost allotted for each house is 70, 000 in the plains and 75, 000 in the hills or higher regions. This has been found inadequate and thus investments will be raised.

Officials predict the monetarily allotment for each house might be doubled. A senior official said, “The matter is being looked at by the finance ministry. We’re hopeful that the funds to be given to each homeless family for construction of a house in rural areas would be adequate.”

The official also confirmed the distribution of cheap electricity via Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana, which is a single-point water connection belonging to the Swachh Bharat Mission and labour.

The official added, “In short, a convergence of all ongoing programmes and a full package of amenities to the identified beneficiaries.”

Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) will be considered to identify the individuals who will be later becoming beneficiaries of this project. The first focus will be led on households with one roof or less and also having a kuchcha (non-firm) roof and floor.

According to SECC, 23.8 million households in rural areas or 13.3 per cent of the total of 179.5 million families belong to kuchcha houses

The Union cabinet has already fulfilled 20mn houses with assistance 15000 per unit under a proposal from the National Mission for Urban Housing.
