Mercury Rises In North India



NEW DELHI: Fresh snowfall and rains occurred in parts of Jammu and Kashmir even as temperatures rose marginally across north India on Sunday providing a respite from the cold conditions prevailing in the region. Delhiites experienced a pleasant and sunny day today with the maximum temperature hovering around 25 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature settled slightly above the season's average at 9.3 degrees Celsius, a Met official said.

Most parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall and rains as the minimum temperature across the Valley and Ladakh region rose providing relief from the intense cold wave.

"The tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam and Kupwara town experienced fresh snowfall while most other parts of the Valley received rains," a MET Department spokesman said here.

Gulmarg received 11 cm snowfall and 22 mm rains, and recorded a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam got 2 cm snowfall, 1.6 mm rains and recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1 degrees Celsius.

The mercury settled at minus 0.9 degree Celsius in Srinagar, which received 4 mm of rainfall, while it was minus 2.8 degrees Celsius at Qazigund, which got 1.4 mm rains, and minus 0.1 degrees Celsius at Kupwara, which had 4.6 cm of snow and 23.8 mm of rains, the spokesman said.

Kokernag resort and Leh town registered lows of minus 0.5 and minus 6.6 degrees Celsius even as Kargil recorded the lowest temperature of minus 15 degrees Celsius in Jammu and Kashmir.
