Largest Political Gatherings That Attracted Millions

Bangalore:  Be it, Independence struggle or the demonstration for seeking reforms, political rallies always turn out to be an effective tool to ignite masses with an urge to demand something to the authority concern. Most recently India has seen its first political rally in Delhi by Narendra Modi, the Gujarat chief minister, after he was declared as BJP's prime ministerial candidate.  A huge turnout of his supporters thronged to the capital just to catch a glimpse and listen to his inspiring speech. Likewise, the world had already witnessed several such rallies in history. Let’s take a look at some of the world’s biggest political gatherings ever come across, listed by The Economic Times.

1. Gandhi’s Salt March in 1930:

The Salt March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha was an important part of the Indian independence movement which began with the Dandi March on 12 March 1930. It was a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly in colonial India. The march was led by ‘Father of the Nation,’ Mahatma Gandhi from his base, Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmadabad, to the sea coast near the village of Dandi. As he continued on the 24-day covering 240-mile (390 km) march to produce salt without paying the tax, massive number of Indians joined him along the way and triggered the wider Civil Disobedience Movement. On 5 April 1930 when Gandhi broke the salt laws, it sparked large scale acts of civil disobedience against the British Raj by millions of Indians. The campaign had a significant effect on the changing world and British attitude towards Indian independence and caused large numbers of Indians to join the fight for the first time.
