Is Suicide the Ultimate Solution For Indian Farmers?

BANGALORE: In a developing nation like India where nearly 50 percent of its population depends on agriculture for a livelihood, farmers play a very important role. Unfortunately, this section of the society is often ignored with their constitutional right and this triggers them to pick suicide as their ultimate solution. The recent incident of suicides committed by 23 farmers from the hailstorm and untimely rainfall hit villages in Maharashtra has once again raised a question of farmer’s condition in the country and sent shock waves especially to the political parties in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

The Chief Minister of Maharastra, Prithviraj Chavan said in a statement that the government is well aware of the plight of the farmers affected by the recent unseasonal rains and severe hailstorms, which hit 28 of the state's 35 districts. "I assure all my farmer brethren that we stand solidly behind you. I request that please don't be carried away by emotions or helplessness. We are doing our best to help you," Chavan said. His statement assumes significance in the wake of the recent threats by the farming community of Vidarbha to exercise the NOTA (None Of The Above) option during the elections if aid is not given before April 10.
