India's Mental Health Hospitals Poor in Infrastructure

Bangalore: Mental illness is one such kind of sickness in India where most of the patients are ignored and left unattended even by their own near and dear ones. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has worked towards providing the patients with the best infrastructure for the treatment, as reported by TOI.

Unfortunately, most of the mental health hospitals lack basic infrastructure and are mostly found in an unimaginable and terrible conditions.

As such, NHRC brought to the notice of the Supreme Court the depressing state of the mental health hospital. Its counsel Shobha pointed out to Justices S Radhkrishnan and P C Ghosh that the situation of the three well known hospitals in Ranchi, Agra and Gwalior were totally in mess, having inadequate staff and equipment and sought immediate action.

She also states that the highest authority of the human rights body have decided to set up state-of-the-art hospitals in all the states in order to fulfill the needs of the mentally ill patients. Notices were issued by the bench to submit the status reports on health facilities for the mentally ill patients within a month.

On the other hand, since India still considers mental illness as a huge burden, it doesn’t bother to update data on the healthcare facilities or improve the infrastructure.
