India's Mental Health Hospitals Poor in Infrastructure

The NHRC expressed that "Presently, no clear picture of the magnitude of the problem of mental health in the country is available. In the absence of clear database, proper policy interventions and allocation of resources is not receiving due priority. Therefore, there is a need to undertake a country-wide epidemiological survey to identify the magnitude of the problem of mental health. It is necessary and desirable that a perspective plan covering the task, financial implications, time frame etc is drawn up keeping in view present as well as future requirement of the problem," reported TOI.

According to NHRC’s report on state of mental healthcare in India, most of the mental health institutes or the hospitals are over-crowded with unhygienic surroundings as they are facing serious financial problems to provide adequate requirements. This in a way strongly violates human rights. So, The Central and the State Government must wake up and work towards improving the infrastructure of the mental health hospitals in order to reduce the rate of mental illness in the country.
