India Likely To Witness 12 Crore First-Time Voters In 2014 Polls
Bangalore: Young Indians are no longer mere spectators in dealing political affairs as they actively participate in choosing their ideal leaders. As per the age data released by the census, about 12 crore youths mostly aged between 15 and 19 will be eligible to enjoy their voting rights for the first time in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Youngsters will indeed have a significant impact in the current political and economic scenario of the country, reports B Sivakumar for TOI.
Uttar Pradesh, accounting for 17.6 percent of the state's electorate, is likely to witness the highest potential of first-time voters with 2.3 crore youths, which is followed by Maharashtra with 1.05 crore first-time voters and Bihar comes third with 94.3 lakh voters.
P Arokiasamy of the International Institute for Population Sciences said, "As per the latest census, UP and Bihar have the maximum number of children due to high birth rate. Naturally, there will be more young people eligible to vote," reports TOI.
