India Likely To Witness 12 Crore First-Time Voters In 2014 Polls



The Election Commission (EC) carried out a study to derive the number of eligible voters before every general election. N Gopalaswami, former chief election commissioner said, "It (EC) examines the data of those in the 18 to 25 age group. If enrolment is low, state chief electoral officers conduct special campaigns to enlist more young people. On the other hand, if there are too many voters over the age of 80, officials check again to ensure that names of all dead voters have been deleted."

Coming down to south, Andhra Pradesh will have over 80 lakh prospective of first-time voters followed by Tamil Nadu with 62 lakh. Other southern states like Karnataka and Kerala could have 58 lakh and 26 lakh voters respectively.

On the other hand Delhi, which goes to the Assembly poll by end of this year, have 16.6 lakh youths eligible to register as voters, followed by Rajasthan with 72.9 lakh and Madhya Pradesh with 74 lakh first-time voters.
