Food Bill: An Indirect Ticket To the Ruling Party for a Third Term?


Bangalore: Food-the basic need of human beings turn out not only a means to stay fit but also a tool employed by most of the politicians during the time of election or ahead of it, especially to gain the trust votes of the masses.

The food security ordinance which was recently launched by the Central government is considered as one of the world's largest welfare schemes. It guarantees 800 million populations with cheap foods every month, reports Soutik Biswas of BBC News.

"The union cabinet has approved the food security ordinance unanimously,” as told by K. V. Thomas Food Minister to the reporters post cabinet meeting.

The supporters of this ordinance feel that in a way this will combat poverty and malnutrition which exist among the most impoverished groups of the country.

But on the other hand, many economists have raised a question whether India can afford such expensive scheme, where the country's annual food subsidy bill will witness double to more than 1.3 trillion rupees.
