Famous Political Prisoners

Bangalore: When others looked out from the prison bars they saw mud, but these political prisoners saw stars. For their politics, they were put behind bars. While some died, some were released, and some are still alive, here are the world’s most famous political prisoners listed by yahoo news.

Aung San Suu Kyi:

Suu Kyi is a personification of accomplishment. Through her two decade long struggle to bring democracy to Burma, she maintained that the ideal revolution is that of the spirit. Branded as a ‘terrorist’ by the junta Suu Kyi was detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her recent release on 13 November 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. She has handled her ordeal with extraordinary grace and dignity.  At the age of sixty four, her enthusiasm has not diminished, and her people march to that elusive quest of freedom and democracy. She has also been the recipient of the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and the Nobel Peace Prize.
