Faith Turns Violent: World's Most Controversial Religious Sites

BENGALURU: Most conflicts in the world today have religious factors attached to them. Israel-Palestine, India-Pakistan and several other traumatic and long running problems in the world are all related to religion.

In the cases where religious divisions play a role in conflicts, they revolve around one or several contested sites or locations. And these sites will have an additional significance beyond their religious importance, such as disagreement over land or borders, or disputes over the site’s role in more recent history.

The following are such beautiful historical sites which became victims  to the controversial nature of religion. The list compiled by The Richest has all the historical sites under the title of ‘controversial religious sites’.

Park 51: Controversial name to Park 51 is ‘Ground Zero Mosque’. Park 51 was an abandoned land after the September 11 attacks on New York’s twin tower. The project was abandoned for a long time as many looked at it as a ‘victory’ memorial of Islam after the twin tower strike. Though the proposal was to build a community prayer, the hostile commentators proclaimed that it was a mosque and didn’t let the project proceed. Now a Museum is soon to replace Park 51.
