Bengaluru Steel Flyover to Have Open Toll System

BENGALURU: Despite the swelling public sentiment against the flyover, the government has gone ahead and announced an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system for the steel flyover. However, the amount of toll to travel from Raj Bhavan to Esteem Mall has not been decided yet. The decision to collect toll was taken in the last cabinet meeting and it has been made clear to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

According to a state government official, “The issue will be discussed in the cabinet and will also be placed before the common public for comments.” There has been a growing angst among the ordinary citizens, who are against this flyover and don’t want this 1,791-crore steel structure to take shape.

The government is very keen on implementing the ORT system, which is doing reasonably well in several countries, including the US and Singapore. ORT allows vehicles to drive past on the flyover without stopping.

“In other words, the steel flyover will have no toll booths. Those who want to use it should buy reloadable tags or cards that enable automatic deduction of toll charges while on the move,” the official explained.

This step will lead to less congestion on the flyover and it will take only 25 minutes to reach the Kempegowda International Airport from the heart of the city.

On the revenue-sharing model, BDA sources said: "Our primary focus now is to get the work started and we'll put out the details in the public domain shortly."
