Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the unprecedented pace and volume of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) while saying that before one gets a delivery app order, 1,000 Mudra loans get sanctioned in the country.
During the 'News18 Rising Bharat Summit' in the national capital, PM Modi compared routine activities with the fast pace of Mudra loan sanctions. "By the time you are done watching an episode on an OTT platform, foundations for 5,000 new businesses are created under PMMY. When a red light becomes green on the traffic light, 100 Mudra loans are sanctioned. Around 200 are sanctioned by the time you brush your teeth, and 400 by the time you are done listening to your favorite song on the radio," he said.
Launched on April 8, 2015, the Mudra scheme is celebrating 10 years of empowering micro and small entrepreneurs across India. The Prime Minister underscored that more than 52 crore collateral-free loans have been disbursed under the scheme in the last decade, amounting to over Rs 33.65 lakh crore.
PM Modi highlighted that the scheme has given new opportunities to those who were previously not in a position to get loans as they lacked collateral. "Mudra has not only been a financial programme; it has become a source of confidence for the country's youth. It empowered people with the ability to dream and work towards entrepreneurship," he further stated.
The Prime Minister further disclosed that more than 11 crore individuals have gained self-employment under PMMY, of which many became first-time entrepreneurs. "These 11 crore people are 11 crore dreams which have found wings in the last 10 years," he added.
The Mudra scheme is designed to encourage financial inclusion by offering loans of up to Rs 10 lakh for non-farm, non-corporate small and micro enterprises. It has especially helped entrepreneurs belonging to marginalised sections, contributing significantly to economic growth and grassroots development.
