10 Indian Women Whose Stories Paved The Way For Women Equality


Durgabai Kamat

Durgabai Kamat’s name is unexposed to the accomplishments she’s made. At a time when the Indian cinema was considered as a taboo for women, Kamat a Marathi actress found her calling in theatre. 

She went on to play the leading lady ‘Parvati’ alongside her daughter Kamlabai Kamat  who played the role of ‘Mohini’ in Dadasaheb Phalke’s second film of motion pictures,  Mohini Bhasmasur’ (1913). The movie made them the first female actress and child actor of Indian cinema respectively.

Sarla Thakral

The weight of oppression on women has made the flight of freedom nearly impossible, but Sarla Thakral has clearly managed to oust the repression earning the title as first Indian woman to fly an aircraft. Her unfailing perseverance paid off as she obtained an aviation pilot license in 1936 at the age of 21. She also became the first Indian to get an airmail pilot's license where she flew from Karachi and Lahore.
