Nadir Shah’s Loot
The Persian ruler Nadir Shah plundered Delhi in 1739. His army slaughtered people and looted all that they could put their hands on. At the end of the episode, 30,000 people lost their lives and Nadir Shah got enough wealth to declare elimination of taxes in Persia for the next three years. Among his loot were the peacock throne and the royal jewelry amounting to crores of rupees. According to a legend, not all his loot could reach Persia. Some of it was hidden somewhere under the Hindu Kush mountains, where these lie buried even now.
Son Bhandar Caves, Rajgir, Bihar
‘Son Bhandar’ literally means storehouse of gold. These twin caves are believed to be the place where Bimbisara’s wife had hidden the royal treasures after her son Ajatshatru imprisoned Bimbisara. A mysterious inscription on wall of the cave suggests the presence of a doorway. A canon mark near the inscription stands testimony to the British’s failed attempt to break open the doorway.
