Bangalore: 10 percent of Indians suffer from chronic kidney diseases (patients who are suffering for more than 3 months). This figure is further expected to increase. Indians are evidently at a higher risk of developing kidney diseases due to the increase in the number of patients suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. It is noted that 60 percent of the patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases in the country are either diabetic or suffer from high blood pressure, reported Pratibha Masand for TNN.

Dr Bharat Shah, Nephrologist, Global Hospital said, "About 3-4 lakh people require kidney transplant in India every year, but only 1 percent actually gets a successful kidney transplant. People suffering from diabetes and blood pressure are especially vulnerable to kidney diseases. It's unfortunate that many are clueless about the deadly association of diabetes and chronic kidney diseases. With a little bit of awareness and education, people with diabetes will have the power to control their condition and enjoy a full life… I would also like to advice people to stop taking pain killers without consulting a medical practitioner. With increasing abuse of pain killers, it is observed that kidney diseases are on the rise," as reported by TNN.

The regular lifestyle changes among the youth and teens are causing an early inception of kidney related ailments. Sedentary lifestyle, consumption of fast food, no exercise, etc is a vital cause for the rise in cases of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and gastrointestinal in India and this further has led to increasing incidence of kidney disease.

However, what is important right now is that strong proactive steps be taken by the government which can help curb the kidney ailments that people suffer from and spread awareness about healthy living.
