Work-from-Home, Lottery, and Fake Bank Mail Among Top Frauds:Report


BENGALURU: According to an internet scams study by Norway’s Telenor Group, work-from home, lottery, and fake bank emails fraud account for the most common scams in India reports Kalyan Parbat for ET Bureau.

The study reveals over a third of users being victims of frauds and 57 percent of them have an acquaintance scammed online. In addition, among users who have been scammed in India, 90 percent of them have lost huge amount of money making the average loss at Rs 8,19,000 as compared to Rs 6,81,070 on a global scale.

Assessing the impact of scams over 400 internet users, Telenor conducted the survey among users aged 18 to 65+ in India, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia to get insights on the methods in which people are scammed online.

"We hope that the findings from this digital consumer study will encourage all of us to take preventative measures to stay safe online. As Indian netizens, we all know that scams exist but to see that the highest sums stolen via scams is in India, shows this is an area we communally need to address," said Sharad Mehrotra, CEO, Telenor India.

Further, the research also represents internet scam prevention methods from experts to provide more information to Indian users. With the emergence of new frauds every day, it is essential to assess the scams and find preventative measures for the same.
