It showed a boost of 16.5 percent from the previous year. The total pretax profit of the company was $6,981,000,000.

Bristol-Myers Squibb, often referred to as BMS, is a pharmaceutical company. Headquartered in New York, the company was formed in 1989, following the merger of Bristol-Myers and the Squibb Corporation.  The company is a manufacturer of prescription pharmaceuticals in several therapeutic areas, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and psychiatric disorders.

 

9. Eli Lilly

Another pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly, invested over $597 million last year for its philanthropic activities (38.4 percent more than the previous years’ investing). It had a total of $5,349,500,000 pretax profit in 2011.

Eli Lilly, founded in 1876 by a pharmaceutical chemist Eli Lilly, is a global pharmaceutical company, located in Indianapolis, United States. The company products are sold in approximately 125 countries.

Lilly was the first company to mass-produce penicillin. It was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to produce human insulin using recombinant DNA. Moreover as of today Lilly is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of psychiatric medications.
