Once the merger is finalized, Mukesh Ambani headed JioStar is also spending billions of dollars on content production.
Mukesh Ambani headed JioStar has planned investing more than Rs 84,000 crore ($10 billion) for content production in the next three years. The news of this move was revealed by Vice Chairman Uday Shankar while delivering a speech at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025.
JioStar, a Viacom18-Reliance Industries' joint venture and the Walt Disney India unit. The unit is concentrating on its content for its development. Shankar said the platform is providing premium and diverse content to its viewers.
Speaking at a session at the first World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) here, he also said the industry needs to focus on 2-3 big drivers, including creating more content, which is tailored and customised to the Indian needs.
"In FY2024, the two businesses spent Rs 25,000 crore on content alone. In FY2025, it jumped to Rs 30,000 crore and the figure for the FY26 will be over Rs 32,000-33,000 crores," Shankar said.
"So, in three years alone, we have spent over USD 10 billion," he said.He explained that the home screen entertainment or video entertainment market is today USD 30 billion in size domestically while its size in the US is about USD 200 billion and in China USD 75 billion.
Saying the value, the space or rate on which the growth has happened during the last 30 years, in the subsequent 15 years also it will keep on growing but there are two or three large drivers on which attention has to be concentrated.
Apart from generating more content which is personalized, specific for Indian requirements, he mentioned we need to push distribution further down.
