India supplies arms to Armenia bilateral deal was transported through Iran corridor
An arms consignment from India to Armenia centered on the bilateral deal was transported via Iran, according to persons familiar with the development. Last year India agreed to a significant export order for missiles, rockets, and ammunition to Armenia. Azerbaijan, which has been in a conflict situation with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, has cried foul and raised the matter with the Indian envoy recently. Head of the department of foreign policy affairs of Azerbaijan Presidential Administration, Hikmat Hajiyev, raised the matter during a meeting with Indian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Sridharan Madhusudhanan.
“At a time when Azerbaijan is negotiating a peace treaty with Armenia, the supply of deadly weapons by India to this country opens the way to the militarization of Armenia and aggravates the situation, hindering the establishment of sustainable peace and security in the South Caucasus region. This is not in line with India’s foreign policy, which is based on the norms and principles of international law, declared by itself, as well as the historical ‘Bandung principles’ of the Non-Aligned Movement, to which India has joined,” Hajiyev emphasized during his meeting.
Earlier this year India-Iran-Armenia formed a trilateral to explore the transport corridor. During a meeting in Yerevan in April, the three sides discussed economic projects and regional communication channels, outlined the prospects of deepening cultural and people-to-people contacts as well as trilateral cooperation in various fields.
The three countries had then decided to "continue consultations" in the format. The trilateral meeting also discussed the use of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) as a regional connectivity initiative. Reported in March that Armenia, whose ties with New Delhi is acquiring strategic dimensions, has proposed the Persian Gulf–Black Sea corridor via Iran parallel to INSTC or part of a new branch of INSTC to connect Indian traders with Russia and Europe.
India Azerbaijan ties continue to be lukewarm in the backdrop of Azerbaijan's close security ties with Pakistan. During its NAM Presidency that would conclude by end of this year, Azerbaijan has often tried to push the Pakistani agenda on Kashmir notwithstanding that NAM is not a platform to discuss bilateral issues."Interestingly, while both Iran and Azerbaijan are Shia majority countries, Tehran historically enjoys warm ties with Armenia. Iran and Armenia also share energy partnership. Iran has also been hosting the Armenian diaspora for centuries.
