Google & TechBharat Launch India's First AI Centre of Excellence
- India’s first AI Centre of Excellence for public good opens in Visakhapatnam
- TechBharat AI Fellowship trains young talent on real government projects
- Google Cloud provides cloud infrastructure and expert support
Google Cloud India and TechBharat Research Foundation have joined hands to launch India’s first AI Centre of Excellence focused on public good. Located in Visakhapatnam, the centre aims to develop practical AI solutions that can improve government services and address social challenges.
The new centre will work on projects in areas such as disaster management, citizen services, education, land monitoring, and governance. The goal is to create responsible, scalable AI tools that help both governments and citizens.
A key feature of this initiative is the TechBharat AI Fellowship, a national programme designed to train over 80 young professionals and 100 interns each year. These participants will spend 120 days working closely with government departments to develop AI prototypes that can be put into real use. The fellowship also offers financial support and accommodation to selected candidates.
The programme encourages innovation through national AI hackathons focused on public welfare. Fellows will benefit from a specially designed curriculum developed with Google Cloud, combining technical skills with practical experience.
Google Cloud supports the centre by providing its advanced cloud infrastructure, mentoring from industry experts, and resources to help scale and deploy AI solutions effectively.

According to Sridhar Gadhi, founder of TechBharat, this collaboration reflects India’s growing strength in ethical AI development and its commitment to using technology for social impact. Ashish Wattal, Director of Public Sector at Google Cloud India, said the centre will empower the government with AI driven solutions that improve public services.
The first batch of fellows will start their training in October 2025, working on challenges from various government sectors. The centre plans to expand its reach and impact in the coming years, aiming to make AI a key driver of India’s public sector innovation.
