Tarnishing Economy Disappoints Indians

Bangalore: Concerned about the economic slowdown, corruption scandals and delayed policy reforms and project developments, Indian citizens are highly and increasingly dejected about their country’s economic future, the survey released by the Pew Research Centre said.

“In a world where the Americans, the Europeans and even the Chinese have reason to worry about their economies, it is the Indians who have lost the greatest faith in their economic future,” the survey entitled ‘Deepening Economic Doubts in India’ done by Pew Research Centre on its Global Attitudes Project said. The survey observed that the disappointment may be due to the country’s unsatisfactory growth percentage (only 5.5 percent) in the previous quarter that ended in June, which is a sharp slowdown from the 8 percent growth in the same period last year.

This depressing economic stature is well reflected on the prevailing disorder in the Congress-led government; meanwhile the interruption from the Opposition is making things worse as they are paralyzing Parliament proceeding in protest, leaving the government unable to act on such issues. All these have left the citizens of India without any hope for the future.

However, 38 percent of the Indians were satisfied with the direction that the country had taken, around 13 percentage drops from last year; and India’s satisfaction exceeds the United States, where only 29 percent were happy about their country’s economy.

Among the gloomy Indian citizens only 45 percent thinks the economy will pick up next year, down from the 60 percent recorded in the last years’ survey. And for the poor economic scenario of the country, the government is projected as the culprit, the survey said.

Increasing crime rates and the persistent electricity shortage are also worrying the citizens, the study that interviewed 4,018 adults in India in person, revealed. The data, according to the survey with a ±3.9 percent margin of error, represented the rural-urban proportion of the citizenry.
