Forbes' List of Richest People in Tech: Chinese Way Ahead of Indians

BANGALORE: The potential of high-end technology, today, can shatter the paradigms of traditional businesses and has famed among youngsters as the fastest mode to get rich. Investors are riding to riches on the coattails of the newest tech innovations. No wonder some of the richest people in the world hail from the technology sector. However India, a country that has been recognized for its rapidly growing economic and technological stature, rides behind most when it comes to figures.

Forbes recent list of 100 Richest Tech Billionaires from Around the Globe underlines this fact- India’s tech sector needs a boost to compete against its neighbors and emerge as the strongest power in Asia. The stats in this list awaken the thought- “Is India losing the science and technology race to China? “

The first Indian to be featured in the list, Azim Premji, Wipro, ranked 11 with a Net Worth of $ 19.1 billion  whereas China’s Jack Ma of the Alibaba Group ranked 7 with $22.7 billion.

The 3 other Indians on the list are Shiv Nadar, HCL Group, ranking 15 with Net Worth: $14.8 billion, Romesh T. Wadhwani, Symphony Technology Group ranking 73 with Net Worth: $2.8 Billion and Bharat Desai, Syntel, ranking 82 with Net Worth: $2.5 Billion. On the other hand, the Chinese counterparts are way ahead of Indians with Pony Ma Huateng, Tencent, Rank: 13 with $16.1 billion, and Robin Li, Baidu, with $15.3 billion and Lei Jun, Xiaomi Inc, with $13.2 billion on rank 14 and 16 respectively. Overall and much disappointingly, only 4 Indians could make it to this list of 100 billionaires whereas China shone brightly with 20 billionaires.

Although India and China are gauged in the same breath by tech industry and are leaving their mark on the global map, when it comes to technology, China is still having the edge. However the future looks bright for India considering its growing potential to effect the world’s economy.
