Indian Born Satnam Singh Creates History By Making It To The NBA Draft
SI Team
Thursday, July 2, 2015
You won’t be judged if you fail to recognize Satnam Singh if you are an Indian. In this cricket crazy (even that is an understatement) nation basket ball has always taken a back seat. But Satnam made his way to the history pages after he became the first Indian (born in the sub continent) to be drafted to Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball League (NBA). Although Canadian-born Sam Bhullar became NBA’s first player belonging to Indian origin, Singh would be the first one to have made the cut. Singh is 7’2 and weighs 290 pounds. Austin Ainge, Celtics director of player tagged him as an "international man of mystery". But a word of caution, Satnam is no where close to setting the NBA arena on fire. Yet Dallas Mavericks saw the potential Singh holds and was convinced enough to take a shot. Kenny Natt, former Kings coach who has previously worked with Singh said, "In case of Satnam, the general feedback on him has been consistent on both fronts when looking at his strong and weak points. To no surprise to us, nearly all have indicated that his speed, lateral quickness, and reaction time is lacking. However, they have all spoken very highly of Satnam’s body size, hand size, physical strength, solid work ethic, crafty inside footwork off post, soft perimeter shooting touch with range, as well as his positive upside as a young player."
