India Needs Good IT Trainers
Thursday, March 1, 2001

As head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Prof. Pankaj Jalote finds himself at the heart of the Indian IT boom. He shares his views on computer education and training in India.

Given the continuing IT boom in India, how would you describe the current
human capital environment in India today?
There is no shortage of dedicated people who have the basic training in science and mathematics. Converting them to `IT manpower' is where the shortage is, and this shortage can be handled by focused programs. So, the human capital is abundant, though not of the quality that one wants, and to reach that point initiatives are needed.

What are the biggest challenges faced by IT training companies?
The single biggest challenge is getting good trainers. All training companies (and indeed private engineering colleges) are operating with poor quality trainers who do not understand the subjects. The companies have built models that try to minimize the role of the teacher, but I don't think that is really possible.

What are the projections for growth of demand for IT professionals in India?
Since the IT industry is growing at about 50 percent every year, the projected manpower requirement will be about 40 percent extra every year. Currently, over 100,000 engineers are employed. That means that next year about 40,000 engineers will be needed, and the requirement will be in excess of 100,000 per year within three years!

What are your views on the exodus of Indian talent to the US and other countries?
It is hurting Indian industry, though in small doses it does not matter much. It has had some advantages as well. More than just people leaving, the loss to industry is due to the experience that leaves with them. So, it is harmful and we should do all that is possible to reduce it, but it is not catastrophic.

How are the conditions for people already outside the US to return and join the IT workforce in India?
The conditions are very good in the industry. General conditions in India are OK, though clearly nowhere close to the West. I think it is an excellent time for IT folks to return to India.
