The IDC is a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets. It has been providing strategic insights for more than 48 years to help its clients achieve big business objectives. Currently, it puts stress on the importance of social software for growth in enterprises.

Enterprises need to anticipate the importance of the use of social software in order to meet and keep in pace with the needs of business today. It is important for social software to be introduced and integrated in the workflow. In fact, its Facebook and Twitter like features such as employee profiles, activity streams, micro blogging, discussion forums, and wikis, content tagging, rating and reviewing have led it to be considered as a Facebook for Business and a Social Intranet.

According to Michael Fauscette, group Vice President for IDC's Software Business Solutions Group, "Enterprise social software are important tools for productivity and decision making across most industry verticals with their act of sharpening employee communications. Companies will thus increasingly want to integrate and embed it in all enterprise applications. Vendors must thus provide open Application Programming Interface and capabilities to add them into the workflow of enterprises". However, the industry is not free from factors that can slow down its momentum which include concerns about return on investment, security, regulatory compliance, intellectual property protection and involvement needed from IT departments to deploy and integrate the software.

Research firms, however much they differ on the grounds of how big the market will be, all share the opinion that the demand for social software skills will continue to grow. Employees today continue to require software that resembles consumer applications used outside work. Social collaborations are a constant need today in order to lead to the growth of enterprises.
