Sony unveils NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras in India


Mumbai: Aiming to capture 40 percent share of total camera market, Sony India has officially unveiled its new NEX series cameras in India. The company claims that NEX-5 and NEX-3 are capable of delivering D-SLR level quality in an ultra compact body and are claimed to be the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital cameras. The NEX-5 is priced at 34,990 in a shade of black while NEX-3 is being sold in tones of black and red for 29,990. The new series is equipped with Background De-focus function, full HD movie, 7fps High Speed shooting and 3D Sweep Panorama. NEX-5 and NEX-3 have features such as a 14.2 MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, a high-speed BIONZ processor, a 3-inch LCD viewfinder, ISO sensitivity up to 12800 and a 3D Sweep Panaroma mode. It also has a SEL1855 zoom lens which is a part of the standard bundle with a detachable flash and a 4 GB memory card. While NEX-5 supports a 1080i video recording, the NEX-3 supports a 1280x720 (720p) video recording mode. Speaking at the launch, Masaru Tamagawa, Managing Director, Sony India, said, "The launch of NEX-5 and NEX-3 marks a milestone for Sony as it yet again reinforces our strength in introducing new and revolutionary products in the market. These cameras are unique as they narrow the gap between professional and consumer segments and deliver the best imaging expertise in the hands of amateurs. We believe that these cameras would surely create excitement among Indian consumers who are dynamic and vibrant and receptive to new products and technologies." The new series provides a lot of added advantages to the users such as standard zoom, high power zoom shooting, E-mount lens for wide-angle, optional ultra-wide angle, fisheye converters and an optional mount adapter. Sony, which has 35 percent share of the total Camera Market in FY10, hopes to grow it up to 40 percent with the launch of NEX series. Sony's Digital Camera Sales revenue is estimated to go up from 600 Crore to 900 Crore by FY11.
