BANGALORE: Researchers have now developed an algorithm which can tell if the user is bored simply by analysing ones Smartphone activity.
According to the report by ‘MIT Technology Review’, researchers at Telefonica Research in Barcelona, Spain have drawn their attention towards mobile activity which looks into the time since the user last used his phone to make a call or send a text. On analysing this kind of data it was easy to give a reliable judgement of boredom as close to 83 pct of the time, reports Indian Express.
Researchers also took the initiative to send smartphone users an article alert to check out on BuzzFeed wherein the results had disclosed that those showing boredom had clicked the link more than the people who didn’t fall in the list. The researchers first evaluated the traits of boredom through an Android app for which they asked participants to rate their level of boredom several times a day for the next couple of week.
This data was compared with other data’s that measured the activity of users on the number of apps they used. In validation of the existing algorithm that portrayed that both measures showed similar boredom. Researcher than developed another Android app that disclosed on its own if the user was facing boredom or not.
On detection of bored symptoms the app would alert those users asking them if they wish to read an article on Buzz Feed’s newsiest app. Another group of participants used the app for the following two weeks, similarly researchers were able to conclude the same results that suggested that bored users were identified to click the link more often than others as well as spend more time looking into the link.
Tilman Dingler, a graduate student at the University of Stuttgart as well as the co-author of the research had stated that the team aims at figuring out the different kinds of content user would like to read when they are bored, this might just include learning activities as well.
