Bangalore: Seagate has started shipping its 3TB Barracuda XT internal hard disk drive (HDD) that was unveiled last year by the company. The pricing of the 3.5 inch Barracuda drive has been pegged at $279 by the manufacturer. The Barracuda holds the distinction of being the highest capacity hard drive and comes with support for operating systems like Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.
There is a 64MB cache with a SATA 6Gbps interface in the Barracuda XT drive. The spinning speed of the 3TB HDD is up to 7,200RPM and the random read seek time is 8.5ms. The Barracuda XT is very low on producing noise at 32dB, making itself useful for quiet systems.
The DiscWizard software ships with the Barracuda and is also available for download. The software enables the system to read and write in the drive but does not allow to boot. For booting, EFI firmware is needed. Most Windows PCs however don't have the EFI firmware.
Last June, Seagate released the 3-TB external hard drive called the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk .
