Why Life Insurers Shun HIV Positives In India?

According to the Institute of Actuaries, insurance policy must be given based on two factors – first, a person who suffers from HIV must have atleast a minimum count of 350 CD4 to purchase insurance. These CD4 are white blood cells that fight against infection. Normally the CD4 of a person ranges from 500-1,500 cells per cubic mm of blood, but in the person who has AIDS, the count is 150 or even below. Secondly, this 350+ CD4 must be maintaining for a longer period before applying for insurance, the precise period can be determined by the doctor under whom the person is undergoing treatment.

When asked about the above suggestions, Dr Atul Kakar, senior consultant at Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi who treats several HIV-positive patients says, "I do not know what they will decide is a 'reasonable period' of ART; it can take up six months to get to a 350 CD4 count, and for some even this is not enough."

So, finally, it’s very clear that the there are many factors that has lead to HIV-positives not getting the life insurance. The provision for providing life insurance for HIV-Positives can be soon seen in action.
