Why Life Insurers Shun HIV Positives In India?

Thus there are two reasons that are making it difficult for the provision of insurance for the HIV-positives. Firstly, HIVs are at high risk of death and the PLHIV require the security that insurance offers. Secondly, as the condition is made more manageable with improvement in medicine, the risks and costs of insuring the PLHIV have reduced.

The HIV/AIDS Bill was passed in 2007 which stated that, rejection of providing insurance is one of the measures of discrimination. One of the sections in the Bill titled Prohibition of Discrimination specifies that, "No person shall be subject to discrimination in any form by the State or any other person in relation to any sphere of public activity including denial of, or unfair treatment in, the provision of insurance unless such unfair treatment is based on and supported by actuarial studies."

The reason why insurance companies denied giving polices for HIV person is the high number of death rates among the total population. Which on the other hand means it is riskier and costlier for insurance firms to sign up HIV-positive clients. This is the reason why insurance companies don’t like to sell policies to HIV-positives.
