Are Your Important Documents Secured?
9. Loans and Receivables
Some people don't like to write down loans given to near friends and would rather remember it. Many do this under the assumption that making detailed personal records of every cash transaction would be demeaning to the relationship. However, after your death, every single rupee might be appreciated by your family. Also, if you are expecting receivables from say the pension fund or purchase returns from showrooms for something you bought and returned, ensure such events are dated so the family can know how much to expect and when.
10. Online Passwords
Remember the shivers you get when friend suggestions on social networking sites shows you a profile of someone you know is long dead? Even worse is when that profile is taken over by hackers and spammers. Not being able to take the profile down may cause grief and disquiet to family and friends. Make sure you have a list of all your online ID and passwords for emergency reference as banks may need to verify things through email.
Along with keeping these documents protected, you can also have a softcopy of all your documents and keep them attached online on portals like Google Docs, Drop Box and Windows Live SkyDrive.
