Why Life Insurers Shun HIV Positives In India?
Bangalore: In the past, it was impossible for someone who is tested positive for HIV to get life insurance. Many insurers were reluctant about the same as the policyholder was at a risk of dying.
As a moment of recognition on the World’ AIDS Day, the government of India had decided to set new rules for insurance companies that could probably leave them worried. The Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDA) took few steps in correcting the existing policy to an extent. It sent a draft that directed provisioning of health insurance and life insurance to those who are living with HIV virus, reports Sohini Chattopadhyay of Grist Media.
However, the draft was specified to life insurers as general insurers were excluded. The issue noticed that the policy would come to effect from 1 April 2014.
